Esther Kühler, M.D.
Esther Kühler received her medical education at the University of Leiden. Esther has always been fascinated by the complexity of the brain and initially trained to be a neuro-surgeon. A deepening interest in people’s behavior led her to a specialization in psychiatry. Esther was certified as a psychiatrist in 2008.
From 2008 – 2011 Esther served as lead psychiatrist at a mental health clinic in the Hague. She then established her private practice in 2011. Esther treats many expats in her practice and acts as an advisor to a number of multinational companies on issues dealing with mental health. She also has experience in the treatment of addiction and is a consulting physician at various hospitals. Esther has supervised the psychiatric training of numerous medical residents.
Denise Trooster, M.D.
Denise Trooster, MD, is an expert in clinical psychiatry specializing in the counselling of expatriates. She provides diagnosis and both psychopharmacological and alternative treatment based on over 15 years of experience as a clinician in Europe, South America and Asia.
Having both lived and worked internationally, Denise has a unique personal understanding of the underlying challenges of living abroad. Additionally, she has extensive professional background within international psychiatry. She gained theoretical knowledge through her certification and research on the various psychiatric challenges and issues faced by expats in the Middle East. Moreover, Denise has worked as an emergency physician in both Spain and Aruba. Most recently, Denise has served as Director of the Intensive Crisis Clinic in Amsterdam. In conjunction with her practice, Denise works as a psychiatric consultant for Sinaicentrum Amstelveen. She lends her expertise to improving psychiatric practices in Sierra Leone through a local non-governmental hospital.
Denise undertook formal training in Psychiatry from the GGZ Eindhoven and Parnassia Bavo institute in The Hague. Prior, she obtained her medical doctorate from the University of Amsterdam in general medicine. She currently holds certifications in addiction psychiatry, nutrition and non-Western medicine.
gertrude de waard, m.d.
Gertrude de Waard was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied in Amsterdam and finished her training as a psychiatrist in 2007 at GGZinGeest. She mainly worked in clinical psychiatry, being especially interested in the social and ethical aspects of mental problems and of the treatment involved. Gertrude has a holistic approach and will always try to see the problems presented in relation to the circumstances and background of the person in front of her. She has a broad experience with mood, anxiety and psychotic disorders and problems with addiction.
She herself lived as ‘an expat’ in Spain for 7 years and worked as a psychiatrist in a private clinic in Cadiz. During those years she traveled back and forth to the Netherlands working as a clinical psychiatrist and doing psychiatric expertise consultations. Spoken languages: Dutch, English and Spanish
thelma nusselder, m.a.
Thelma Nusselder studied Clinical Neuropsychology in Amsterdam (VU), with additional courses at the department of Clinical Psychology. She also studied psychology in Madrid (at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid). After acquiring her masters degree in 2009 she has worked with a broad range of problems like addiction, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders and trauma. She has always found it important to understand the cultural aspects of someone’s problems. She is interested in both diagnostics and treatment.
In her treatment Thelma combines various types of psychological treatment like: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, motivational interviewing and solution-focused therapy. She offers therapy in Dutch and English and can combine this with Spanish.
Anna Costello, M.SC.
Anna has a Master’s degree in Psychology from Leiden University, specialising in Clinical & Health Psychology. She works on an individual basis with a focus on Cognitive-Behavioural therapy (CBT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT).
She grew up in Ireland and England and has since lived and worked in France, Japan and more recently the Netherlands. She previously worked in international HR before training as a Psychologist.
Anna offers treatment in English and French.
carlijn de bruijne, M.sc.
Carlijn has a background in clinical psychology, having obtained a masters degree from Leiden University. She was trained by Fonagy and Bateman (Anna Freud Centre, London) in mentalization based treatment (MBT) to treat personality disorders. For several years she worked as a therapist in a specialized mental health care clinic in the Netherlands. She treated patients on an individual basis as well as in groups using mostly cognitive-behavioural techniques and psychodynamic therapy.
In addition to her work as a therapist, Carlijn works as lecturer for a post academic training institute for psychology. She teaches several techniques, including how to work with patients suffering from somatoform disorders or negative self-image. Currently she is researching the effectiveness of treatment offered to patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Carlijn offers treatment and diagnostics in Dutch, English and French.
petra riedlin, M.SC.
Petra trained at the Minster Centre in London obtaining a MA in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. She spent a number of years working within the Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust and the Haringey and Barnet Mental Health Trust in London providing short term psychodynamic therapy to clients from various religious, ethnic and social backgrounds and with diverse sexual identities.
Petra has been in private practice offering short term and open-ended therapy to adults and adolescents since 2009. Petra is an adult third culture kid (ATCK). She was born in Japan and has lived in 8 countries and more than 14 cities. She also holds a BA (eqv) in Psychology and a MA in Philosphy from University of Glasgow and can offer sessions in English, Dutch and German.
JOLIEN LOUWERSE, M.SC.
Jolien acquired her Master’s degree from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), specializing in Clinical Developmental Psychology. She has always been fascinated by different countries and cultures; she studied a senior high school year in the United States, and travelled to Uruguay for a volunteer project. For several years Jolien has worked at the mental health care facility of the island Sint Maarten, where she gained experience helping the local community, as well as expats with their psychological challenges.
Jolien is an all-round psychologist trained in Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT) and trauma therapy EMDR. She offers diagnostic assessments and treatments in both Dutch and English.
zita meijer, ph.d.
Zita has a background in social psychology, obtaining her master’s from the Free University (VU) Amsterdam and her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, United States, specializing in cultural psychology. Zita has lived in the United States as well as in Japan, where she spent three years doing cultural comparative research. Zita has been affiliated with the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam, where she taught Intercultural communication, Effects of a long-term stay abroad and Introduction to Japanese Language & Culture.
In addition to her academic studies and research, Zita was trained in The Work of Byron Katie and Acceptance Commitment Therapy, both third generation cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approaches. She is trained to do EMDR trauma-treatment and has further expanded her psychotherapeutic palette with a schema-focused therapy approach. In addition to speaking native Dutch, Zita speaks both English and Japanese.
richard hectors, m.sc.
Richard was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied in Amsterdam and finished his Master’s degree in both Social- and Clinical Psychology. For several years he worked as a therapist in different mental health care clinics in the Netherlands and England. Richard treated clients on an individual basis as well as in groups using techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and EMDR.
He has experience working with depression, posttraumatic stress, chronic pain and – fatigue, burn outs and addiction. He has also gained experience working abroad in England at a treatment centre for addiction. He travelled through different parts of Europe, Asia and South America to meet different people and to get a better understanding of their cultures. Richard offers treatment in both Dutch and English.
heleen houben, m.sc.
Heleen holds master degrees in Theoretical Psychology from Utrecht University and Clinical Psychology from Leuven University. She works with (young) adults on an individual basis with an eclectic approach.
She was born and raised in the Netherlands, then studied in France, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. Over the past twenty years Heleen spent several periods abroad due to work opportunities of her partner, which brought her a broad range of expertise in the psychology field and in the cultural sector. Having lived, studied and worked internationally, Heleen has a profound understanding of the challenges and difficulties of living abroad. Heleen offers treatment in Dutch, English and French.
nienke streng, m.sc.
Nienke was born and raised in the Netherlands. After high school she studied a year abroad in Kansas, United States. She acquired her Master’s degree in Neuropsychology from Maastricht University, and did her research internship in Arusha, Tanzania.
Nienke worked for several years as a therapist in specialized mental health care clinics in the Netherlands, and meanwhile did post master trainings in Neurofeedback, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT) and trauma treatment (EMDR). She is specialized in treating young adults and has experience in family treatment.
Nienke has special interest in different cultures and the influence of immigration on establishing of one’s identity. She worked for some time at the TU Delft as a therapist for the international students, and did project work with students in Kenya. Nienke offers diagnostic assessments and treatments in both Dutch and English.
jorien van andel, M.SC.
Jorien has obtained her Master’s degree in Clinical and Developmental Psychology at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. She started her career as a psychologist at the social work facility of the municipality of Utrecht, where she did diagnostic assessments and psychological counseling for clients in the social welfare system.
From 2014 to 2017 Jorien has lived in New Delhi, India, where she set up her own practice serving the expat community. Working closely with the medical staff of a number of embassies, Jorien has worked with people from many different cultural backgrounds. She feels that the experience of having been an expat herself has shaped and enriched her as a therapist and as a person. From a basis of mutual trust and alliance, she works closely together with her clients in determining the best approach for achieving the therapy goals. Jorien has been trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Spoken languages: English and Dutch.
felipe hoyos, M.SC.
Felipe has a Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Leiden University. He works on an individual basis, drawing from different evidence-based approaches such as psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Felipe was born and raised in Chile in an international environment and has lived and worked in the United States, France and the Netherlands. He has many years of experience working as a certified yoga teacher, which has given him precious insight on the complexities of the human mind. Having lived and worked in several countries, Felipe is familiar with the challenges and cultural issues that come with setting home in a foreign land. Felipe give therapy in English, French, Spanish.
fan wang, Ph.d.
Fan was born and raised in China. After finishing her Bachelor in Clinical Medicine (Medical Psychology) in China, she pursued her dream to study abroad in 2009. Fan obtained her first Master in Cognitive Neuroscience at University of Amsterdam and continued with a PhD degree studying the decision making capacity in patients with eating disorders at University of Hong Kong. Her strong passion in deepening the understanding of the human mind led her to another Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Leiden University.
Fan adopts a personalized therapy approach and applies evidence-based treatment methods such as cognitive behavioral therapy, schema therapy and mindfulness based cognitive therapy. She has a strong desire of promoting the awareness of mental health in the Asian expat community. Fan offers treatments in Chinese and English.
willem van eijk, m.a.
Willem van Eijk is a BIG registered GZ psychologist with over 25 years of clinical experience in individual and relationship therapy. Next to his private practice he has been working in various collaborations with other psychologists and psychiatrists.
Willem graduated in Clinical Psychology at the Leiden University and was trained in hypnotherapy with Bill O’Hanlon (pupil of Milton H Erickson). During 8 years he studied Essence work at the Diamond Logos Academy with Faisal Muqqadam and has been trained in EMDR and Brainspotting, as well as in psychodrama and Internal Family Systems. From his experience however, the quality of the connection with the client is more important than whichever applied technique. Sessions are held in English or Dutch.
stephanie baumgarten-kustner, m.sc.
Stephanie obtained one of the last doctorandus degrees from Leiden University in clinical psychology. Born and raised in California, she has studied in the United Kingdom and here in the Netherlands and works primarily with young adults.
In addition to her work as a therapist, she also teaches undergraduate and graduate psychology students and works as a school psychologist at the European School of the Hague. Stephanie offers sessions in English and Dutch.
caroline middelsdorf, m.sc.
Caroline was born and raised in Germany, studied Psychology in the United Kingdom and holds a Master of Science degree in Applied Psychology from Middlesex University London. She has previously been working in psychiatric clinics in Switzerland where she supported clients on both, long-term and emergency basis.
She is an expat herself and therefore has a great understanding of the challenges expats might face. Caroline offers treatment in German and English.
